Unable to Locate the Configuration File in MS CRM

Importing an organization to MSCRM could prove to be a big headache, especially where the Organization is using many workflows. Recently we’d to import an organization from a client to our DEV and the import process was uneventful. When we tried to access entities and internal data, problems started to crop and CRM gave a cryptic “Unable to find the configuration file” message.
In such times Event Viewer could be our best friend and it gave the first pointer where we came to know that ‘CIA.GI.Plugin.PreCreateCounter’ Workflow DLL is the culprit. Digging further revealed that the DLL is stored in the database; hence getting additional details was not possible. Our client was also at a loss as the customization was done by other party and support from them is no longer available.
To locate the exact cause enabled trace in CRM and went through the log file till we found the above mentioned DLL’s name and there we again found the “Unable to locate the configuration file” message. Since, this DLL is open source and we knew very little about it, downloaded the package from http://mmcrm.ru/wp-content/uploads/counter/CrmExtensions.CounterCRM4.zip
Downloaded package has a nice manual on installation where it mentioned about the configuration file required by this DLL: counter.config. This file has to be copied to the “C\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics CRM\Server\bin\assembly” or wherever the CRM installation directory exists. Got the file from the client and copied it to the folder and CRM started working as expected!!!
